How a Mathematics and Religious Education can help a student to prepare for a life of excellence

In this short reflection, I share my thinking on how a Mathematics and Religious Education can help a student to reach the heights of their human excellence.

Firstly, a Mathematics education can help a student to recognise and understand that the universe is ordered by a unique set of mathematical laws and principles. It is in and through these principles that the universe not only operates but it is also made intelligible to the human intellect. Therefore, the eternal knowledge of mathematics can help a student to appreciate the harmony and admirable structure present within creation—leading to their heightened appreciation of the need for order, routine and good habits in their daily life.

Secondly, the world’s major Religious Traditions present to us living (and lived) examples of the ideal human person—people who transcend(ed) to a higher plane of living. As such, learning about the world’s major Religious Traditions can help a student to appreciate the human striving towards perfection. In fact, the ideal human person that is promoted across the major Religious Traditions are all people whose daily activities are centred around a clear set of timeless principles. Therefore, the pearls of timeless wisdom contained in a Religious Tradition can help a student to live out a well-ordered life—a life ordered towards high ideals and noble human aspirations.

For these reasons, I think that a Mathematics and Religious Education can really help a student to prepare for a life of true human excellence.
